From Building Theory to Bio-Design

Franca Trubiano

This evening's talk will travel across two publication projects published over the past three years. The first is Building Theories, Architecture as the Art of Building, which offers an alternate interpretation of the history and theory of architecture; the second is BIO/MATTER/TECHNO/SYNTHETICS: Design Futures for the More Than Human inspired by the work of contemporary designers and researchers working at the intersection of the biological, the material, and the technological. More broadly, I argue that the most ubiquitous and obvious of things are often the most overlooked.

In architecture, “matter” in one such thing: poorly considered and misunderstood by those who consider themselves designers. This lecture offers new ways of redressing this situation in calling for a more grounded definition of architecture.
