The Invention of the Window
Abstract
Are windows necessary? The Biophilia movement maintains, somewhat simplistically, that the window is not the product of aesthetic desire but of physiological necessity, required for our physical and mental well-being, and argues that our species has evolved in the natural world and is genetically encoded to engage with nature. A more complex answer is provided by anthropology. In the dwellings of societies that live close to nature, such as Native Americans, the picture window, the one with a view, is almost unknown. Why? Phillipe Descola makes a distinction between Animistic and Naturalistic societies. Naturalistic societies, European ones, have invented an entity, “nature”, and humans belong to nature’s opposite, culture. Animistic societies, such as Native Americans, make no such division. Nature and its inhabitants cannot be subdivided. History suggests rather that the window, the one that provides a view of nature is a product of this division. It is a more recent invention, something we invented to look back into the natural world we have left.

Behavior Emerges In-Between
Abstract
When actors encounter the certain structure, behavior emerges between them. This structure is not only physical but relational of the network of things. Today’s urban life style is totally depended on the industrial services where food, energy and house are only accessible by paying money, and can’t stop the exploitation of the planet. It is time to reimagine the accessibility to local resources by learning from ethnographical network of things and decoupling the democracy and capitalism. Thus, design intelligence is now critically shifting from space oriented into network oriented.

A Museum, a Factory, a School: Reconstituting Places of Experience
Abstract
The Pearl River Delta (PRD) region has experienced an economic boom in decades, while its drastic environmental changes and population mobility have completely disintegrated its once-coherent geographical urban-rural organism. Changing cities and population have triggered a complex dilemma of modernity. In response, O-office intervenes in the design practice of the region where they themselves grew up as both retrospective observers and critical participants. They take the evolving relationship between people and urban/rural space as the main thread of their research, on the basis of which they establish their design methodology and tactics. The presentation selects three cases of O-office’s architectural works in the PRD region to illustrate how they reconcile the historical connection between people and place, resist the unrelenting spread of the mediocre paradigm, allow material and spatial realities to articulate their own alternative urban and rural narratives, and reweave places with the texture of lived experience.

Search for Human-Centered Space and Architectural Anthropology in ModernJapan
Abstract
From the early 20th century through the postwar era, Japanese architectural and urban design actively adopted Western models to modernize social systems and bodily practices. However, this led to a widening gap with everyday life. In response, peripheral movements consistently reexamined the meaning of space beyond imported ideals. From the 1920s, Japanese architects had already begun deeper inquiries redefining spatial concepts through embodied experience. This perspective, shaped by thinkers like Ruskin, Simmel, and Boas, found early expression in the work of Wajiro Kon, whose descriptive observation of everyday life grounded a distinctly anthropological and tactile mode of architectural thought. Postwar figures such as Mayumi Miyawaki and Makoto Motokura extended this approach through detailed studies of alleys, daily techniques, and communal relations, aiming to restore human-centered environments beyond mere regionalism. This study explores the theoretical grounding of these inquiries, particularly in dialogue with Bernard Rudofsky’s Japan-based research, to trace how concepts of everydayness, embodiment, and relationality consistently challenged the dominant narratives within Japanese modern architectural discourse.

Steen EilerRasmussen’s China: A Formative Journey
Abstract
This paper examines Steen Eiler Rasmussen’s 1923 journey to China as a formative experience that fundamentally shaped his approach to architecture. Through analysis of Rasmussen’s sketches, writings, and photographs, the study reveals how his six-month immersion in Chinese architectural traditions informed his later theoretical work, including Towns and Buildings (1951) and Experiencing Architecture (1959).
The research demonstrates how Rasmussen’s encounters with Chinese urban planning, chromatic hierarchies, and material philosophies enabled him to develop a deeper understanding of spatial experience and sensory dimensions of architecture. His cross-cultural observations served as a defamiliarization technique that allowed him to distinguish between architecture’s culturally specific expressions and universal human needs.
By examining how Chinese architectural traditions challenged Western spatial assumptions, this study contributes to the symposium’s call to uncover overlooked perspectives in modern architecture. Rasmussen’s method of immersive observation offers a valuable model for contemporary practice, demonstrating how architects can create environments that address fundamental human needs while respecting cultural specificity in an increasingly globalized world.

Gestures of Community
Abstract
Joseph Rykwert’s close attention to Vitruvius’ account of constructing the “primitive” hut led him to bypass the topic on which this short talk will focus: the role that gesture played in the early days of the art of building, the same days when spoken language was first developed, and with it human community—as narrated in the theorist’s myth. Contemporary anthropologists argue that three motives prompt pointing gestures: requesting, informing, and sharing. Showing sharing is essential in the construction of the public realm; also, the construction of communicative buildings. The need for structural integrity requires vertical bearing in every building that intends to hold its ground while sheltering the patterns of human life within its walls. Better buildings make an expressive show of bearings thus taken, as well as other forms of integrative orientation, such as the involvements of the work in its urban surroundings, involvements that are necessary in the formation of communities. The case explored in the talk is a new Community Center in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, designed by Zhang Pengju, and finished in August, 2023.

“Assembling the Sand of the Sea of Prayer”: Alberto Cruz’sLos PajaritosChapel
Abstract
In 1952 Alberto Cruz Covarrubias was hired by the School of Architecture of the Catholic University of Valparaíso. A young and energetic teacher, he soon began a transformation of the school by forming an interdisciplinary faculty that explored architecture’s relation to poetry, art, and science. Twenty years later, their efforts coalesced in the creation of the “Open City,” a collaborative project where faculty and students design/build prompted by “poetic acts.” At the origin of the school’s pedagogy lies Los Pajaritos chapel, an unexecuted project by Cruz that —published in the form of a text— became required reading in Valparaiso and other architecture schools in Chile. This presentation will revisit this project and text. Here, one not only finds the traits that made the “Valparaiso School” and the “Open City” internationally renowned, but also a precocious anthropological focus on the potentials and limitations of modern architecture that has been until now insufficiently appreciated.

The Courtyard House as an Anthropological Structure of the Imaginary. Trajectories
Abstract
In the years 1962-1964, the Italian architect Marco Zanuso designed and built a small granite house measuring 15x15 in Sardinia, with the help of two peasant laborers. It was organized around a square courtyard and is the archetype of the primordial courtyard house.
We owe to the French anthropologist Gilbert Durand (1921-2012) the reflection on the strong relationship between the imaginary and reason. His inquiry into The Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary (the title of the book published in 1960) provided subsequent generations of scholars with important methodological tools to study not only myths and symbols but also a vast geography of the imaginary, populated by archetypes that largely explain human relationships with the environment.
Within this framework of reflections and interests, it can be useful to contemplate the theme of the courtyard house as an archetypal theme, starting from its anthropological codification in the Mycenaean megaron of archaic terracotta models: the outdoor space of the fire and the covered space of the dwelling.
The domus of Pompeii, even in its transformation (which occurred in the second half of the first century) from a simple atrium house to one enriched with a second peristyle/garden atrium, in its dynamics of typological transformation/adaptation, can be compared with the Chinese courtyard house (siheyuan) in its potential developments related to the family history of its inhabitants. In the historical urban fabrics of Nanjing, the three-courtyard house is predominant, even replicated in informal shack settlements, further demonstrating the archetypal status of the courtyard house in itself.

Dali as Ground: Navigating Permanence and Flux
Abstract
In 2012, architect Zhaoyang established his practice in Dali, Yunnan Province. Over the past 13 years, this deliberately chosen “context” has been continually re-examined through a series of experimental projects. The architect is compelled to discern what remains relatively constant and what changes rapidly. Perhaps the task of architectures lies in navigating this dynamic between permanence and transformation. And it is within this ongoing process of adaptation that a certain method or attitude may gradually begin to take shape.

The Inter-personal and the Climatic: An Anthropological Foundation for Architecture and the City
Abstract
This paper rethinks the foundation of architecture and urbanism through human solidarity. Drawing on Tetsuro Watsuji’s concept of fudo (climate), it challenges the latent individualism in notions like anthrōpos or homo, emphasizing instead the inter-personal. Climate is understood not as a mute background but as an active force penetrating individuals. Man is defined as the being of ex-sistere, or “to be out among other ‘I’s.” Climate is thus a medium of solidarity through which deficiency and insufficiency of an individual being in coping with the climatic conditions is complemented. The paper explores how architectural and urban spaces are the embodied result of solidarity in relation to different climates—for example, the dramatic openness of traditional Japanese houses in monsoon climates, and the interlocked, self-effacing forms of desert housing. These contrasting responses reveal diverse forms of solidarity shaped by climate, their limits, and possibilities for synthesis.

The Face, the Height, and the Open Hand: On theAnthropological Roots of Spatial Thinking
Abstract
In the earliest surviving text on architecture, Vitruvius famously described the proportional relationships among the parts of the human body. Taken as a whole, he added, an extended body could yield both circular and square outlines. While these two notions—internal proportions and total bodily form— remained distinct and primarily visual in their reception, a deeper and intertwined history lies beneath the surface of the ancient text. This study explores how the parts and the forms of the body were expressed in the first acts of collective building and the architecture of early settled life, revealing their economic, ecological, communal, and cosmological foundations. It traces their echoes across diverse traditions and examines their attempted revival by modern architects. By foregrounding orientation, offering, and renewal as the anthropological archetypes of spatial extension, the study argues that their realization in resonant architectural settings depends on a distinct human capacity: design thinking—at once cognitive and visionary, sensible and intelligible, corporeal and communicative.

Pathways in the Forest: The Anthropological Collection of the AAAC
Abstract
Federico Madaro’s presentation explores the philosophical and epistemological implications of Jorge Luis Borges’ Library of Babel, using it as a metaphor to introduce the anthropological collection housed in the AAAC. He reflects on the challenges of knowledge retrieval in an age of information overload and connects this with Professor Joseph Rykwert’s curated library. He traces the historical development of anthropology in both Western and Chinese contexts and highlights Rykwert’s inclusive and humanistic vision of the discipline. The collection exemplifies a lifelong pursuit of understanding humanity across time, space, and culture, forming a network of knowledge pathways—a true “forest of books.”
