The purpose of this course is to provide to students who are embarking on careers in scholarship in architecture a re-introduction to the primary texts of the discipline written by architects in European languages. In addition to introducing themes and texts, this course aims to increase and ease the student’s familiarity with the practices that are typical of scholarship, the forms and habits of scholarly inquiry, particularly when that scholarship seeks interconnections with design practice. The theme for Fall 2025, Theory in Word and Image, will explore how architects use both writing and drawing to develop and present their understanding of and proposals for architecture. The course’s basic premise—that theory is developed verbally and visually—runs against the grain of common conceptions, which tend to assume text-based thinking stands at the center of theory. The aim is not to subordinate text-based thought, but to put image-based thought at the same level, discovering the potentials and limitations of both kinds of ‘theorizing.’ A consequence of this re-ranking and pairing of word and image is that practicing architects, for whom drawing is a fundamental form of thought and communication, will resume their central role in the history of theory.

Western Classical Architecture and Modern Design Thinking (Autumn Semester)--1 Credit

Antonios ThodisArchitecture Internalization Demonstration School, Assistant Professor
1)通过洞察十九世纪末至二十世纪若干开创性建筑师如何从不同立场借助古希腊神庙及其柱式,挑战彼时建筑现状,从而培养设计思维;涉及的主题包括:结构与装饰、结构与空间表达、构造/地形、色彩/光线/阴影、纪念性、意义/隐喻/象征;
Design in architecture always works with light and geometry. Metaphor is no less important, although it is less often discussed. The importance of all three can be seen in architecture throughout the world and throughout history, in the early period of western architecture in ancient Greece and the modern and post-modern periods. Of course other design topics also play important roles in design thinking and will be examined in this course: structural and ornamental analysis, proportions, relationships to the landscape and topography, and the origin and meanings of elements, such as the orders, understood metaphorically as anthropic and vegetal bodies. As such, they have served as catalysts in design that opened new venues for the discipline’s future. Pioneers of modern and postmodern architecture were not an exception.
The goal of the course is twofold:
1) to cultivate design thinking by providing insights on how selected seminal architects of the late-19th and 20th centuries, from varied standpoints, challenged the architectural status quo of their time by engaging the ancient Greek temple and its Orders through themes, such as: structure and ornament, structural and spatial articulation, tectonics/topography, color/light/shadow, monumentality, meaning/metaphor/symbol, and,
2) by exploring the Greek temple’s and its Orders’ meaning during the Archaic and Classical periods (8th- 4th centuries B.C.) of ancient Greece to set up an explanation of how this understanding can enrich design thinking today. Along with texts from architects and architectural historians, as well as ancient Greek material culture and literature, readings from the fields of archaeology and the Classical studies will be examined.

The seminar course will discuss sustainability problems faced by urban designers, landscape architects and architects today. The starting point is that individual sustainability problems never exist in isolation and are always linked with other sustainability problems and affected by dynamics that can lead to the need of reconsidering their definition and linkages. The seminar will introduce and discuss the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and interpret these in terms of their linkages and significance for engendering equitable futures and more specifically livable and green cities. Key concepts will be introduced, such as Critical Zone research, that serve to ground the SDGs within a larger framework.
Furthermore, related aspects of land knowledge, land cover and land use will be introduced and novel correlations between constructions, soil and biomass will be explored. The concepts of Urban LandForm and geomorphic tectonics will be discussed to offer an alternative reading of urban morphology engendered by architecture and landscape architecture hybrid typologies. This includes the topics of ecological building envelopes and novel urban green systems. Specifically selected data-driven computational design methods, including decision support systems will be introduced that can serve to advance sustainable planning and design. Towards the end of the seminar session the different discussed aspects will be summarily reviewed and synthesized to provide an overall framework for advanced sustainable planning and design.
The teaching goal is the introduction of the individual topics and their correlation with the proposed larger framework. Students will be asked to select one of the presented topics and problem formulations to research further and present orally at the end of the seminar session.

This eight session lecture series introduces a materialist approach to the history of architecture and technology. Beginning with the departure of ‘design’ from the craft of building in the European Renaissance, it will cover an historical overview of the contradictory social ends to which architectural technology has contributed in the modern era. Examples will range from mass produced housing, to algorithmic design, and artificial intelligence. In each case we will try to understand how social context mediates the inherent potential of the technology, framing architectural practice at the intersection of social and technological forces.

Domestic habits vary widely across time and place, yet a house invariably accommodates work and rest, growth and aging, music and color, animals and plants, friends and foes. When housing emerged as a central concern for Modern architects—faced with both the perils and possibilities of industrial urbanization—they looked both far and back, toward the distant and the “primitive,” in a deliberate search for the essentials of habitation. While experimenting with modern techniques and engaging in contemporary social debates, many sought to rediscover the fundamental needs and principles of dwelling through travel and anthropological study. Conceiving the modern person as a “primordial human” whose dwelling harmonizes the rhythms and impulses of biology and psychology with the flows of the world, they proposed designs that sought thematic continuity and coherence, resisting exclusively historicist, artistic, functionalist, or consumerist attitudes. Aligning with the insights of modern architects, recent archaeological research has challenged the conventional narrative of the “primitive hut” as a linear progression from utilitarian necessity to expressive complexity, revealing that the practical aspects of the earliest habitations of hunter-gatherers and early farmers were interwoven with cosmological significance.
This graduate seminar explores both real and imagined ancient habitations and their reflections in modern architecture, examining the works of architects alongside select pre-modern settlements, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean region. As the stable climate patterns that once enabled the shift from hunting to farming begin to collapse and technological and digital transformations challenge established practices, it is timely to delve into the anthropological dimensions of architecture and investigate precedents that reveal the multifaceted yet intrinsically connected dimensions of habitation.

Professor and the foreign Dean of the Architecture Internationalization Demonstration School, Southeast University. He is an expert in the history and theory of architecture, with specific emphasis on their contribution to architectural design, especially in the modern period. Within history, theory, and design, he is known internationally for his contributions to ideas and historical developments of architectural design and technology, gardens and landscapes, and more recently architectural sustainability. All of David Leatherbarrow’s work in scholarship examines two essential problems or topics in architectural design: the architectural site (landscape or urban) and architectural construction. These two topics are unavoidably commonplace in contemporary design practice. They are also in need of reconsideration, in light of changes in contemporary culture and society. To date, David Leatherbarrow has published ten scholarly books and over one hundred and twenty scholarly articles. In addition to his scholarship, Leatherbarrow is highly respected internationally as an educator, having won numerous awards for his teaching, among which is the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Architectural Education (2020). Before teaching at Southeast University, he has been teaching at Pennsylvania University since 1984, and Cambridge University and the Polytechnic of Central London before that. This course takes the form of both lectures and seminars, and by guiding students to reflect on the common problems in architectural design to gain new understandings, so as to develop students' awareness and ability of theoretical thinking. In terms of teaching content, this course probes into different topics for each year. These topics, on the one hand, are based on architecture’s ontological problems such as site, enclosure and materials; and at the same time, explores issues like temporality, corporeality, and ecological dimensions of architecture. The scope of the topics covers the research field of Professor David Leatherbarrow in the last two decades, and embodies his academic study and research approach. The course is 32 academic hours, and the lectures are typically given in May and June. Lectures are all given in English by Professor Leatherbarrow, Professor Shi may give summerizing translation intermittently when necessary. Seminars are co-hosted by Professor Leatherbarrow and Professor SHI Yonggao.
